Our Story

On January 6, 2021, a historic day unfolded in our nation's capital that will be etched in history. As the foundation of our nation was put to the test, many individuals heeded the call to stand up for their rights, their future, and their beliefs. However, the aftermath saw the government taking action against them, leading to a series of events that unveiled the deep-seated issues within the American justice system.

Before January 6th, many were unaware of just how broken the justice system in America truly was. The January 6th defendants and their advocates soon realized that this injustice had persisted for far too long.

In September of 2021, The Real J6 was founded with a mission to give a voice to the voiceless. Its primary focus was to shine a light on the treatment of January 6th defendants at the hands of their own government. However, as the organization delved deeper into this mission, it became clear that there were numerous unmet needs for the defendants and their families. This realization led to the creation of Stand in the Gap.

Through the dedication and hard work of numerous individuals, substantial improvements have been made within the DC Department of Corrections. These include changes in visitation policies, easing of COVID-19 restrictions, modifications in guard behavior, and even garnering Congressional attention. The unique perspectives and experiences of the January 6th defendants are central to our mission at Stand in the Gap.

We aim to highlight and address systemic issues within the justice system, providing support and advocating for those affected by these issues.

Now, with the January 6th defendants having been pardoned, our efforts are pivoting towards systemic reform. Our new focus is on legislative change and justice system reform, starting with the Federal Bureau of Prisons and the DC Department of Corrections. Leveraging the firsthand experiences of those detained, we understand the critical importance of looking into the conditions and practices behind prison walls. Our goal is to ensure that the justice system operates with transparency, fairness, and humanity.
